As many as 275 migrant laborers have been enrolled in the program. Mararikulam, Alappuzha: Mannancherry panchayat in Alappuzha district has set an example worth emulating for the other grama panchayats in the state by launching a literacy program for migrant workers.
The project christened ‘Changathi’ (friend) will be organized as part of the initiatives undertaken by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority.
As many as 275 migrant laborers, comprising 265 men and 10 women, have been enrolled in the program. Classes will be held for five hours a week for a period of five months. Nineteen study centers have been established at locations adjacent to their workplaces and living quarters, said Mannancherry panchayat president M S Santhosh.
A common examination to assess their literacy standards will be conducted on June 10. Hamari Malayalam, a textbook specifically designed for the purpose, will be used for the project. Volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) are being roped in to conduct classes.
In the initial phase, classes will be offered to migrants residing in Mannacherry panchayat only.
Earlier, a survey had been carried out by volunteers of the National Service Scheme unit at SN College, Cherthala, to reach out to migrant workers and enroll them in the program. The three-day survey was conducted in twenty-three wards of the panchayat.
A training program for the instructors was also organized, officials said.
