Man kidnaps woman who wouldn't marry him, police act this time

Aluva: A woman who married her sweetheart against the wishes of her family was kidnapped by the man who had expected to marry her. She was later rescued by the police who arrested three persons including the woman’s aunt.

The quick response by the Aluva police was in stark contrast to their counterparts at Gandhinagar in Kottayam, where a young man lost his life due to police inaction and possible connivance with the criminals. Kevin P Joseph was abducted by his fiancee's brother last Sunday but the police took their own sweet time in responding to the woman’s complaint.

Muhsina, however, was luckier. The 20-year-old woman was tricked into going to the district hospital at Aluva, where her abductors were waiting for her. The police acted swiftly and got her released within two hours.

Muhsina's family had fixed her marriage with Mukthar, aged 22, two months ago. The woman, however, left her home to live with Mujeeb. The family reported that she was missing and the police traced the couple. The couple registered their marriage later.

On Friday evening, Muhsina received a call from her aunt Shiji, who told her that her grandmother wanted to see her. The old woman was under treatment in the hospital. When Muhsina reached the hospital around 3.30 pm, Shiji pushed her into a car. Mukthar and his friend Thoufeeq drove away with her.

Mujeeb's brother and sister-in-law, who had accompanied Muhsina, informed the police immediately. By the time the police reached the hospital, Muhsina's grandmother was discharged from the hospital.

A team led by deputy superintendent of police K B Prafulla Chandran and circle inspector Vishal Johnson combed the area for the woman and her abductors. Mukthar landed in the police net around 5.30 pm. Muhsina was sent home to her husband.

Mukthar had dropped off Thoufeeq and Shiji at Vazhakkulam. They were later arrested from the area. Thoufeeq is accused of theft in cases registered in Aluva and Edathala police stations. The accused were produced before the court on Saturday.

Mukthar is a resident of Pengottusseri near Edathala. Thoufeeq lives at Muthirakkattumukal near Kunjattukara. Shiji lives near the AVT company at Vazhakkulam.
