File photo for representation onlyThodupuzha: Sale of ganja and other addictive substances is rampant in the area despite stringent measures taken by the authorities. Student community is the main target of the peddlers and the number of addicts is steadily growing, causing much concern.
Though several members of the ganja mafia had earlier landed in the net of the police and excise, it is observed that these people return to their old ways soon after release on bail.
The authorities say some college students in the area are actively involved in the sale and use of ganja. A more grave aspect of the issue is that the use of addictive substances is spreading among school students also.
Areas where ganja sale is widespread include various spots in Thodupuzha town, Mangattukavala, Perumbillichira, Sasthampara, Karimannur, Udumbannur, Alakkode and Kanjar.
Usually, ganja is sold and used by small groups of addicts who gather at secluded spots. Recently, four youths were nabbed by the police in Udumbannur for carrying ganja beedis.
Elaborate precautions are taken by the ganja mafia to keep out of sight of the authorities. The suppliers have a clear idea about the law and carry the minimum quantity of the substance so as to secure bail easily. Sale is conducted with a new customer only if he is introduced by a known buyer.
When a customer makes an order by phone, the ganja is supplied in the specific quantity only. Some users reach the spot where the peddlers are stationed at that time and make the purchase. In some cases, the ganja is packed in small amounts and hidden at various places in the town. When the payment is made, the customer is informed where to find his stuff.
Operators bringing ganja in bulk from Tamil Nadu and distributing it among retailers based in Thodupuzha town are active in Rajakkad and Adimali areas. The authorities find it hard to launch a crackdown on these gangs as they communicate using a code language.
