palakkad-mahesh Forests never tire the son of Mani and Kumari from Kuthiramooli near Kollangode.

Palakkad: Mahesh got hooked to wildlife photography when he was a tenth-standard student. The wild beauty enamored the teen who accompanied his photographer-father on a government assignment inside the Parambikkulam Wildlife Sanctuary.

Forests never tire the son of Mani and Kumari from Kuthiramooli near Kollangode. The photographer is just back from an unforgettable trip to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. The domain of the erstwhile Gond kings gave a royal treatment to the wildlife enthusiast.

He returned with rare photographs of tigers frolicking in a stream, an opportunity any photographer would die for. Mahesh did not have it easy though. In his third trip to the reserve, he stayed inside the forest from January 16.

Behind each of his shots lies a story. Mahesh said that he can never forget a trip to Munnar when a female elephant charged at him and his friend who were trying to photograph her calf. He said that he had waited for 60 hours for a tiger to revisit a kill.

Like any committed wildlife enthusiast, Mahesh can spot a tiger by listening to the alarm calls of lesser animals and birds. He has framed numerous elephants, tigers, leopards and hornbills during his career as a wildlife photographer along the major forests of India, including the Jim Corbett National Park, Bandipur National Park, Munnar, Chinnar, Parambikkulam, Aralam, Eravikulam, Nelliyampathy and Valparai.

From a modest point-and-shoot camera, Mahesh has come a long way to Canon EOS 1DX and EOS 5D Mark IV.

Mahesh pursues varied interests. Being an alumnus of the Kochi West Short Film Institute, he has worked as an assistant cameraman for two movies. He has also directed a short film and an album.
