Varkala chases spotted deer a day after leopard scare

A day after rumors of sighting a leopard spread panic in Sreenivasapuram, a spotted deer (chital) gave Varkala residents a chase. After turning up near the Varkala Taluk Hospital junction around 11 in the morning, the deer sprinted around the area at top speed with its two-legged competitors lagging way behind. It disappeared just as dramatically, leaving the suspense intact while efforts are being made to locate it.

There is no clue yet as to how the animal found its way to the busy junction. With people trying to chase it, the deer took off along the town’s main roads, veering off into less crowded alleys, jumping over compound walls, gates and dashing across the courtyards of houses. The pursuers had a hard time keeping up as it vaulted over compound walls six-and-a-half ft and higher with ease.

Eye witnesses who provided a route map of the chase say the deer crossed the hospital junction to enter the Lions Club road. From there it changed course to run across deserted areas and courtyards of houses. The residents of the houses hardly had the time to spot the deer sprinting by, but got a scare seeing the crowd rushing in. Raw from the leopard scare, the residents panicked until they were assured that it’s a harmless and visibly terrified deer.

The chase lasted about two hours by which time the deer had reached Munda. The deer was last seen jumping over the compound wall of a house after which it could not be spotted. The Palode Forest Department has been informed of the sighting. Locals say that the deer is most likely hiding in the open grounds in the area where there are thickets and bushes in abundance. Meanwhile, there are reports of the deer having been spotted in the last two days near the Chilakkoor Siva temple.
