Aluva: Director Alphonse Puthren’s debut movie Neram, which had the cash registers ringing, was the story of a young man, played by Nivin Pauly, who sets out to find the money that had been stolen from him. But in real life, instead of Nivin, it was Alphonse’s father, Puthren Paul, who decided to nab a pair of thieves all by himself; and the stolen item was definitely not money but a nice huge bunch of plantain fruit.
He even managed to recover the mainour or the 'thondimuthal' from a local fruits vendor at the Power House Junction. Puthren and his family have some organically grown plantains on the plot where their house stands in Aluva. The family do not grow them to sell but for their use. Once they even had a bunch which was 'taller' than Alphos and it was in the news then.
The plantain bunch was stolen from Puthren Paul’s house in broad daylight when nobody was home. The family was in Kanyakumari when one of the neighbors called up Puthren on Tuesday to inform that a banana was seen ripe on the bunch that weighed almost 30 kg. After returning home, Puthren inspected the plantain bunch on Wednesday morning to see that two bananas had ripened.
He decided to wait for a few more days until the bunch was ready for harvest. Meanwhile, the family again went on a tour. On return, the plantain bunch was missingn. Alphose is in Chennai busy with his new movie. Puthren Paul was disheartened that the plantain bunch that he had grown with so much love and care had been stolen. But he was not ready to give up yet and decided to examine fruit stalls in the city.

Puthren Paul easily identified the bunch as the one stolen from his house. The bunch which would have fetched at least Rs. 900 in the market was sold by the thieves to the vendor for just Rs.450.
The vendor returned the plantain bunch without taking any money from Puthren Paul when he realized that he had been duped by the youngsters into buying a stolen item; and he even identified the two young men who had allegedly stolen the bunch from Puthren Paul’s house and sold it to him. The youngsters confessed to their crime; but Puthren Paul said that he was not intend to inform the police.

Puthren Paul was disheartened that the plantain bunch that he had grown with so much love and care had been stolen.
