Yesteryear actress Charmila has wowed the Malayali audience with her endearing performances in the super hit movies like Kabooliwala and Uncle Bun.
The pretty actress tied the knot and quit movies when she was a popular artist in the South Indian movie industry. After parting ways with her husband Rajesh, Charmila made a comeback into the movies. However, the actress says she is not offered any interesting roles in her second innings.
In an interview to a popular Malayalam magazine, Charmila opened up that financial crisis had prompted her to return to the silver screen. She said she had earned lots of money when she was a leading actress, but lost everything due to her luxurious life style and setbacks in her married life.
The actress also confessed that she would have committed suicide had she been a fragile person like she used to be in the past. “I cannot do that now. I have a son and a bed ridden mother to take care of. I cannot leave them to starve. The Tamil actors’ association finances my son’s education. I have to find work in the movies to survive,” reveals Charmila.
Charmila says she didn’t save money wisely even though she earned a lot of money. She added she was interested to take overseas trips whenever she got the remuneration for a movie. Charmila admitted she splurged all the money that she earned from the movies to have a lavish life style with her husband. However she added that, after her divorce she found it extremely difficult to meet her expenses.

“My marriage with Rajesh destroyed me. I had to sell even my land and house for him. This pushed me into depression, and it really took a toll on my health as well. I lost weight drastically and my hair began to fall. I was once used only to the continental cuisine. But now I eat rice and even feed it to my son. He shouldn’t suffer what I went through. Let him grow up realizing our financial distress. But I cannot compromise on his studies,” says Charmila. She added that it was Tamil actor Vishal who took care of her son’s education expenses until last year.
The actress says she was offered many roles in the past when she didn’t bother much about her career, but laments she is not offered good roles or opportunities now, when she needs it the most. “Now I stay out of problems and concentrates only on my work. But no one offers me interesting roles, not even the veteran directors. They have no idea how helpless I am. I just have one request to all of them. Please give me opportunities in the movies,” said Charmila.
