When the title song 'Atchi Putchi Kathukkitchi' is played on screen and the superstar performs on the street like a boss, the audience cheer and celebrate the return of their beloved 'Dhool' actor by singing and dancing along.
No, the superstar hasn't undergone any major makeover this time. As Jiiva, aka Sketch, he is a street-rowdy willing to take lives for his master. The turbulent Vada Chennai, the northern suburbs of Madras, has been captured with all its violence and dark shades. Jiiva, the right hand of a local financier-cum-gangster (Hareesh Perady) challenges his master's rival Rayapuram Kumar (Baburaj) in a provoking act which yields him deadly setbacks.
The movie progresses through the life, emotions, fall and survival of the city's most sought-after goon, Sketch. Jiiva's plans (sketches) of tracking and hijacking a vehicle or a person is considered flawless and thus he gained the name Sketch.
Tamannah appears as a rustic beauty who falls for the heroic rowdy. The Bahubali girl has got very little to do in the movie, apart from romancing around with Sketch in a couple of scenes.
The movie manages to build a dynamic cultural premise in the first few scenes. But the director fails to tag on an exciting storyline. It offers peek into the violence, serial murders and counter-killings in Vada Chennai. The climax pops up abruptly and delivers a social message.
Baburaj stuns the audience as a notorious gangster who sadly gets little space to unleash his talent. Hareesh Perady's 'Saith' in Sketch would indeed be a milestone in his career. The movie's lively mood is sustained by the peppy yet romantic background music and the songs which have already gone viral on internet. Tollywood's most sought-after music composer S S Thaman has once again shown us that language is no barrier for music.
When Tamil cinema is breaking stereotypes, Sketch sadly belongs to the past with respect to its plot, story-line, and making. Yet, all the actors have done their best. Soori, Sriman, Ravi Kishan, and R K Suresh have delivered stand-out performances. Director Vijay Chandar's second movie after Vaalu (2015), Sketch simply has a fanfare script to lift Chiyaan from a series of box-office flops in the past few years.
