Mattancherry review The movie has former national footballer I M Vijayan, Lal, Kottayam Nazeer and Jubin Raj Dev in prominent roles.

Mattancherry is an action drama which takes viewers on a ride through the town of Mattancherry, popular for its religious harmony. It is the second directorial of Jayesh Mynagapally after his comedy flick Gandhi Nagaril Unniyarcha and has former national footballer I M Vijayan, Lal, Kottayam Nazeer and Jubin Raj Dev in prominent roles.

Mattancherry, which is scripted by Shaji N Jaleel tells the story a group of people who are willing to give up their life in order to protect their home land from real estate gangs. Our heroes are thugs to the outside world but saviors to the locals. Narunth Asi (I M Vijayan) leads the local gang trying its best to shield their town. Lal plays the powerful Majeed, a retired don in Mattancherry.

The good points in the movie are that it does justice to the genre and there is some real action. The characters play their parts pretty well and have done justice to their roles.  Kottayam Nazeer has lighter moments on offer with his situational comedy. A treat that one shouldn't miss in the movie is I M Vijayan's iconic bicycle kick goal straight from the 1996 Scissors Cup final.

A poor script, average music and cinematography and a lack of novelty are dampeners. Thankfully, the film is 120 minutes long and the writers and makers try their best in telling the story as quickly as possible. There are moments that serve no purpose to the film. Sit back and relax. After all, you won't kick yourself for missing this show.
