'Thobama' quick review: friends in pursuit of money Sharaf U Deen, Krishna Shankar and Siju Wilson play the lead characters in the movie.

Director Alphonse Puthren turns producer to make a film that brings sidekicks of his hit films 'Premam' and 'Neram' to the forefront.

The debut movie of director Mohsin Kassim tells the story of three friends who embark on the pursuit of making money.

Thommi (Sharaf U Deen), Balu (Shiju Wilson) and Mammu (Krishna Shankar) form the trio who come from very different backgrounds, but bound together by the warmth of friendship. They name their group Thobama.

The trio's attempts to make money by hook or crook sets them up with the lottery mafia. They try to rig the Kerala state bumper lottery, which millions of Malayali's put their hope on, to change their fortunes. At a point, their friendship itself is threatened and the plot then navigates through the troubled times they face.

The narration fails to hold you on tenterhooks at times. Slow motion and different camera angles, as seen in Alphonse Puthren films, are unnecessarily injected in some scenes. Perhaps, the plot needed more romance, action and comedy to keep the audience engaged.

The music by Ragesh Murugesan is slightly different from the rocking performances of previous Puthren hits. While the trip song 'Payunne Mele' is a must-add to your travel playlist, the melodious love theme song sticks to the classic romantic genre.

Lyricist Shabareesh Varma also plays an important role in the film.

Actor Punya Elizabeth charms as the love interest of Balu, but her role gets confined to that. She doesn't share screen space with the other two lead actors nor is involved in the main plot.

The youthful magic of 'Premam' and 'Neram' is missing in this tale of friendship.
