The raga of rain: When Amritavarshini ushered in showers of rain

Kattappana: It was an evening worthy of legends. The high ranges of Idukki district were pacified by benign summer showers as soon a group of musicians finished performing immortal compositions in Amritavarshini raga.

Kochuthovala was as blessed as Ettayapuram, the Tamil Nadu village where Carnatic composer Muthuswami Dikshitar is said to have brought rains with his heartfelt rendition of Amritavarshini. Meanwhile, rain was felt at many parts of Kerala as well.

The occasion was a musical evening organized by the Ragasudha Sangeeta Sabha in honor of Dikshitar, Thyagaraja, Syama Shastri and Swati Tirunal. Around 200 singers participated in the event which began with a Pancharatna Keerthana in the morning and culminated in the Amritavarshini offering led by Prof. Ayamkudi Mani.

Nellai Viswanathan, Vypeen Satheesh and Shinu Gopinath accompanied the singer.

The event was inaugurated by Electricity Minister M M Mani. Gopika Krishna Jayan, the budding singer who scored first in the classical music category in the district-level school arts festival, was honored with a cash award instituted in honor of Parassala Thankappan Bhagavathar.
