Wow makers Team WowMakers.

It is said that you really do not know what you want unless you have tried something. Some people however do not fall into this group. Here are six of them – who chose to step away from the monotony of engineering to pursue a career in media.

Even creative minds like the WowMakers know how to have fun.

WOW- tales

They say WOW is the ability to bring change. Indeed, this team had personified the perception. It all began as a tiny initiative by two engineers named Vivek Raghavan and Jaseem Thayal Shareef, who hail from Northern Kerala. They studied at the College of Engineering, Kasargod district. As studens, both Vivek and Jaseem had worked as freelance designers. It was only a matter of time before they realised that their passion lay elsewhere and decided to persue it. Vivek and Jaseem were soon joined by four other friends from college namely Jithesh Lakshman, Nithin Bekal, Ralu Rajan Madathil and Deepak Prabhakaran. Today, these techies are known as WowMakers.

WowMakers was the first incubatee at the StartUp Village in Kochi. The company was established in 2011. At first, WowMakers pitched themselves to be a branding company. They were instrumental in the branding of the StartUp Village – including its logo designs, the posters etc. Over a period of time they had also ventured into the arena of explanatory videos. Unable to strike a sound balance between both aspects, the firm chose to specialise in the latter. Today, it is one of the leading firms in the arena. They had started out small, but today, the WowMakers consists of a 19 member team with over 200 clients situated in India and abroad.

When asked about the initial days at the StartUp Village, Deepak said, “Back then there were several opportunities for us. We had received a lot of support. The opportunities have only increased today. The journey has been wonderful.”

The idea

“Wouldn't you prefer watching a demo video of a product, instead of referring to a user manual?” asked Deepak, COO, WowMakers. The team realised that there was a lot of scope in this area. “There were only a few firms that offered such services. So we decided to go ahead and pursue the task,” Deepak added.

The team has launched a curated crowdsourcing platform Crowd Studio which helps in conducting various design contests.

Marketing strategy

The company focuses on digital marketing. This is a B2B firm. In other words, it offers its services to other companies. “Social media has been instrumental in this regard. We were able to reach out to many clients and people by means of Facebook pages, Twitter, Youtube etc. We also have advertisements and other revenue generating strategies as well,” said Deepak.

Being you own boss

The team believes that the experience has helped them in many ways. “We are not working for a third person. This product is ours and that is why we are willing to work hard. We might not be making as much as many others working in MNCs. But we are happier; more satisfied. We enjoy what we do. It is not a mere job. Running a company is fun. It has its ups and downs. But all that is part of the game,” Deepak explained.

He also added that he would encourage people to start their own companies and his team would be delighted to help them. “It is all about being confident,” said Deepak.
