Abu Tahir

Palakkad: Snakes are not something you want to mess with. They strike quickly, slither up fast and are often venomous. But for auto driver Abu Thahir of Cheraya Ammatti Veetil at Kodangadu here, catching snakes is just a little-known service he provides for free.

While most people scream and scamper for dear life at the sight of a snake, the natives of Kodangadu confront the slithering reptiles slowly and calmly. They would just dial up the mobile number of Thahir and keep watching the serpent from a safe distance.

As soon as he gets a call, Thahir reaches the spot and catches the snake. He then releases it in the wild. Thahir has so far caught as many as 1,000 snakes, including four king cobras.

His expertise in snake handling even earned him a temporary job as a watchman at the Kerala Forest Department's Rapid Response Team office.

Apparently, Tahir has caught snakes from everywhere in Palakkad. But thrice, he received more than he bargained for and got bitten. Yet, Tahir is unfazed and continues his small service for the humanity.

Tahir attributes his immense courage and presence of mind to the grace of Almighty and believes it’s the super power that helps him undertake such risks.
