Pensioners get a breather as government allots Rs 130 cr to KSRTC

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major relief measure, the Kerala government on Tuesday allotted Rs 130 crore for distributing salary and pension arrears to KSRTC employees.

Finance minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said the amount will be given to the state-run transport corporation on Tuesday itself. This is in addition to the Rs 30 crore paid to the corporation every month to meet its expenses.

The minister's intervention comes after Manorama News reported the plight of pensioners. The former staff have been on an indefinite strike here.

Isaac promised to find a solution to the issues regarding payment of salary and pension in the cash-strapped public utility within three months.

"KSRTC is undergoing a financial restructuring. It will take three months to complete. After that there won't be any crisis," he said.

Transport minister Thomas Chandy said salary and pension arrears for one month will be distributed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In May, Chandy had told the assembly that the KSRTC would not resort to lay-off at any cost to make it profitable.
