CPM censures Mukesh, terms his actions ‘immature’ Mukesh

Kollam: The CPM Kollam district committee has come down heavily on party MLA and actor Mukesh for his outburst against media following the last week’s general body meeting of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

Terming his actions ‘immature and inappropriate’, the district committee, which met here on Thursday, criticized the actor-turned-MLA for coming out openly in support of the accused actor at a time when investigation in the case of abduction and sexual assault on a leading actress was going on the right track.

Though the topic was not on the agenda of the meeting, a section of the committee members demanded that the issue warranted to be discussed since it pertained to atrocities against women.

“It was a big fault on the part of the MLA as his emotional outburst at the press briefing put the party and the government on the defensive. The incident has shocked the collective conscience of the society and people have set aside their political leanings to stand behind the victim. Being a people’s representative, Mukesh should have avoided making such remarks even after the police seized the memory card containing visuals of the prime accused harassing the actress, which is a key evidence in the case,” the meeting observed.

The party has made him realize his mistake and warned not to repeat this kind of misconduct in future, said CPM Kollam district secretary K. N. Balagopal. As per the party directions, Mukesh tendered apology and explained his stance on the issue to the media, he added.

The party leadership’s decision to offer key positions to three members of a family also triggered heated debates at the meeting. CITU state secretary N. Padmalochanan pointed out that the three relatives were appointed to the Devaswom Recruitment Board, Judicial Commission, and as a private secretary to a minister hailing from another district. As there are lots of deserving party members who sacrificed a lot for the party, it was a condemnable act on behalf of the party leadership, he added.

CPM central committee member P. K. Gurudasan explained that the decision was made by the party state secretariat and informed that that opinions aired at the meeting would be conveyed to the leadership.
