Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Monday annulled the appointment of Dr Babu Sebastian as vice chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University.
The court said that Sebastian was appointed the VC flouting norms set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC). He was appointed to the top post before he completed service as a professor for 10 years as prescribed.
The court also found anomalies in the constitution of the panel to appoint the VC. A division bench, comprising the chief justice, pronounced the order on a quo warranto submitted by one Prem Kumar.
Sebastian, who had served as the director of the State Institute of Education Technology, was appointed the VC in August 2014 during the tenure of the Oommen Chandy-led UDF government.
Sebastian was understood to have come into the top post as a nominee of the Kerala Congress (M), then ally of the Congress-led front.
