Kevin was killed allegedly on the instructions of his fiancee Neenu's family.Thiruvananthapuram: The suspected honour killing of Kevin Joseph became the bone of contention between the ruling CPM and the opposition Congress as the 11th Kerala Assembly session began on Monday.
Even while stating that an 'unnecessary' political angle was given to the brutal murder of the Kottayam youth, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan claimed that the family of Kevin's fiancee, who have been named as accused in the case, were Congress workers.
"Neenu's father Chacko, mother Rehna and brother Syanu Chacko are Congress workers," the CM of the Left Democratic Front told the assembly on Monday.
“Such a brutal murder should never have happened in our society. Kerala should join together to put an end to this decaying culture,” he said. The CM confirmed that Kevin was kidnapped and murdered, and that 14 people have been arrested in the case.
"Strict actions would be taken in the case. None of the culprits, including erring officials, would be spared,” the CM asserted.
The 23-year-old youth was abducted on May 27 by a 13-member gang allegedly on the instructions of Neenu's family, who objected to their relationship. He was found dead in a river in Kollam on May 28. While Neenu's father and brother have been nabbed by the police, her mother is still absconding.
Meanwhile, the opposition UDF moved an adjournment motion, seeking to discuss Kevin murder case.
"The police are becoming law breakers. Both the government and police are in hand in gloves with the killers. Kevin was kidnapped and killed by the CPM," Congress MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan alleged.
Kevin's relatives had alleged that he was tortured and killed two days after he and his fiancee filed a joint application for marriage registration at a sub-registrar office near here. ASI Biju and police driver Ajaya Kumar of Gandhinagar police station were suspended for taking bribe from some of the accused in the case.
