Chennai: Safeer Karim, the IPS officer from Aluva in Kerala, who was caught cheating in the UPSC mains examination has been booked under charges IPC 420 for cheating and 120 (B), along with relevant sections of the IT act.
He has been handed over to the local police after he landed in the IB net. His wife, who is also accused of colluding in the crime, has been picked up from Hyderabad.
The officer, aspiring to enter the Indian Administrative Service, took the wrong way to clear the highly competitive exam and was caught with bluetooth equipment, camera and reportedly even a mobile phone concealed on his body at the examination center at Chennai, police said on Monday.
The arrest was reportedly the result of a concerted move by the intelligence bureau that had placed him under their watch for suspicion of wrong doping in a previous examination.
He is reported to have tricked the guards and carried the devices, including a camera on his shirt button.
He was reportedly using the device to communicate with his wife at Hyderabad who has now been arrested. Reports said he had admitted to the crime.
Safeer Karim, who also owns the Karim's IAS institute, is currently an assistant superintendent of police in Tirunelveli district.
The officer, currently on probation may face serious complications in his career if the charges are proven.
