Shafi dismissed BJP's claims that the low voter turnout would hurt Congress.
UDF and NDA candidates are optimistic about crossing the five-digit majority mark.
An overwhelming 67.5%, including two voters who blindly said they would vote for the LDF candidate, dismissed the CPM charge that Congress candidate Rahul Mamkoottathil had smuggled money in a trolley bag.
Mamkoottathil dismissed the possibility of a triangular contest in Palakkad, stating that the main competition is between the UDF and what he mockingly called the 'Communist Janata Party.'
He was discussing the controversies raised against Congress by the BJP and the CPM.
The advertisements appeared in two newspapers: Siraj, the official mouthpiece of the Samastha AP faction, and Suprabhatham, supported by the EK faction of Samastha.
The byelection was necessitated after Congress leader Shafi Parambil resigned as MLA, having been elected to the Lok Sabha from Vadakara in the general elections.
The key contenders include UDF’s Rahul Mamkoottathil, LDF-backed independent Dr P Sarin, and BJP’s C Krishnakumar.
The alleged communal tone of the advertisement published with an objective to appeal to a particular community sparked sharp reactions.
Supporters, particularly of the UDF and BJP, began pouring into Palakkad town from distant places such as Mavelikara, Pattambi, Kasaragod, Kannur, and nearby Malampuzha as early as Monday morning, adding to the charged atmosphere.
