It seems the self-defence training given to girls by the police under the Nirbhaya project has really made them ‘nirbhaya’ (fearless) and courageous. Priyanka, a 19-year-old resident of Kadavoor in Kollam district, is just one of them. She made ample use of her defence skills while catching a youngster who tried to attack her. She grabbed him by the collar and pushed him to the floor before raising an alarm. She even managed to remove the handkerchief with which the assailant had covered his bike’s number plate. Priyanka reported the incident to the police and played a significant role in nabbing her attacker.
Others came to know about the incident, which happened a few days ago, when the bike-borne youth was arrested by the police.
Priyanka had twice received self-defence training under the ‘Nirbhaya’ project while she was in class 11. She had also enrolled herself in the karate class conducted at her school at Neeravil.
The Janamaithri police have been conducting self-defence classes for young girls to make them mentally and physically capable to fearlessly face any adverse situation.
Following an article which appeared in the Malayala Manorama about the incredible presence of mind showed by Priyanka during such a situation, the police personnel have decided to felicitate the young girl at the district headquarters of the police department.
Priyanka, who scored an impressive 85% marks in the class 11 exams, is all set to pursue higher studies. Her parents, Kumar R Nair and Anitha, and brother Prince are indeed proud about her.
