Kochi: Here is a competitor for self-driving cars like Tesla, which cost millions. A group of third year Mechanical students at Rajagiri College of Engineering, Kakkanad developed a car that can be controlled with one’s thoughts spending very little money.
If you want the car to pick up speed, it will move fast. When the driver feels sleepy, the vehicle will slow down and come to a stop. It can be used as a driverless car too.
The students behind the project are, Jeffin Francis, Aby Biju, Anupama Johnson, Jaswant Mathew, Allen Johns Ookken, Jagil Jersen and Renju Mohan. Their car can also be controlled with a mobile app.
The students had first come to the limelight by turning an old Maruti 800 into an electric car. They had converted it into a powerful vehicle of 2 hp and capable of covering 50 km after charging it once. The electric car can travel at a maximum speed of 70 kmph and was exhibited at several places in the country.
Utilizing the prize money earned by displaying the car, the students developed 'Brainwave', a low cost technology and 'Green fox', a mobile app which they applied on the same Maruti 800. The mobile app can be used to 'remote control' the car by somebody outside the vehicle.
An EEG headset is attached to the driver which monitors the signals from the brain. The EEG is also connected to the control panel of the car. When a thought about increasing the speed passes through the driver’s brain, the signal is sent to the engine and the car travels faster.
The students were guided in the project by vice-principal Dr John M George and assistant professor Vishnu Shanker.
