Kottayam: The Rs 3.5-crore solar power project being implemented at the Mahatma Gandhi University will be ready to operate from next month. A 400 kilowatt (kW) solar plant is being raised at the university site near here.
Once the power capacity is enhanced to 800 kW, the higher-education institution located at Athirampuzha, will become the first university within Kerala to be self-reliant in power production.
One (kW) is equal to 1000 watts.
It is estimated that 1,660 to 1,800 unit electricity could be produced daily at the campus from the solar panels installed on the terrace. Surplus power generated during holidays will be transferred to the power grid of the state electricity board, KSEB.
The solar project is being executed by Wapcos Ltd, a public sector agency that comes under the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, on the lines of the facility established at Cochin International Airport.
The new project is part of the environment-friendly initiatives of the university.
