Even as critics say anyone other than Keerthy Suresh would have done less justice to portraying the eventful journey of the talented but mercurial actress Savitri in the film 'Mahanati', the film has kept the box office ringing from the outset.
The movie directed by Nag Ashwin has earned a record overseas collection of $1 million by the end of the first week. And the film is expected to earn $2 million in the US.
Keerthy Suresh had earlier said the character of Savitri in the film 'Mahanati' was the most challenging role she had played so far. The success of the 'Mahanati' is seen as a magnificent feat as Telugu audience has usually been averse to biopics.
However, the undulating path of Savitri's life had enough of crests and troughs to arrest viewers' attention. The narrative covers all the prominent incidents in Savitri's life including her bitter experiences during her formative years, her elevation to stardom, marriage to matinee idol Gemini Ganeshan, slip into alcoholism, penury and the final unceremonious exit.
While actor Dulquer Salmaan plays the not-so-elaborate but pivotal role of Gemini Ganeshan, actors like Shalini Pandey, Rajendra Prasad and Prakash Raj essay prominent roles in the film about the late actress.
Meanwhile, Samantha Akkineni plays the role of a reporter and it's through her investigative journalism that the story of Savitri unravels. Telugu actor Vijay Devarakonda also makes an arresting presence in the film.
