Chinta Jerome, the chairperson of Kerala State Youth Commission, in one of her recent public addresses criticized the song'Jimikki Kammal' song from Mohanlal's Velipadinte Pusthakam has been leading chartbusters ever since its release.
The song’s huge popularity even caught international attention when a BBC anchor was seen dancing merrily to the Malayalam number. People even made their own versions of the song and posted videos of them dancing to it. In fact the video of teachers and students of Indian School of Commerce garnered around 8 million views on YouTube, making Sheril the lead dancer in the group an Internet sensation.
But the peppy lines of 'Jimikki Kammal' have not gone down well with some. Chintha Jerome, the chairperson of Kerala State Youth Commission, in one of her recent public addresses criticized the song and the huge popularity it has enjoyed.
Taking a jibe at the lyrics, Chintha Jerome said that most of the mothers in Kerala do not wear a ‘jimikki’ (earring); and the fathers here do not steal those earrings. Even if their jimikki does get stolen, the women do not drown themselves in a bottle of brandy. She further added that the reason why the song became a sensational hit should be debated and discussed.
Now, the video of the young leader criticizing the song has gone viral and trollers have marked her speech as their new target. Her speech attracted also ridicule from many quarters, including noted actor Murali Gopy and music director Shaan Rahman. Shaan who tuned 'Jimikki Kammal' took to Facebook and laughed out at Chintha’s words. He said he had seen many cases of idiocy, but something stupid and funny of this stature was a first.
On the other hand, Murali Gopy said, “It’s a blessing that ace musicians and poets such as Devarajan Master and ONV sir have passed away. Else they would have been made to clarify a few lines from their evergreen songs like Ponnarival Ambily and the like.”
The lines of 'Jimikki Kammal', which has virtually become the anthem of the youth, was written by lyricist Anil Panachooran. And Shaan Rahman’s catchy tune has set millions dancing to it. This song, which has broken many records on YouTube, was sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Ranjith Unni.
