Again, a Sanskrit film to open Indian Panorama at IFFI Nedumudi Venu (center) plays an important role in Ishti.

Panaji: A total of 22 films, cutting across genres and languages, will be featured in the Indian Panorama section of 47th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to begin here Sunday.

For the second year running, a Sanskrit film will open the feature section of the upcoming Indian Panorama 2016. The film, Ishti, directed by G. Prabha, is set in the mid-twentieth century Kerala, where young Namboothiri brahmins successfully challenge the orthodox, patriarchal traditions of their community. The film has also been included in the international competition segment. In the 46th edition of IFFI, Priyamanasam, also a Sanskrit film, had been selected as the inaugural film for the Indian Panorama section last year.

The Indian Panorama will also feature four films each in Bengali, Marathi and Hindi, three films in Kannada and Malayalam and one film each in Konkani, Manipuri, Assamese, Tamil and Telugu, a statement issued by the organizers said.

The festival will start from November 20 and will conclude on 28.

The feature film section jury, headed by Kannada director-producer Rajendra Singh Babu, selected 22 films out of 230 eligible entries.

The jury had a panel of 13 members, including actress Rama Vij, director Arup Manna, producer-director C.V. Reddy, director Girish Mohite, writer K. Puttaswamy and writer-filmmaker Uday Shankar Pani.

Three mainstream films have also been selected under Indian Panorama Section of the film festival.

Some of the selected feature films include Roopanthram, Veeram, Natsamrat - Asa Nat Hone Nahi, Irudhi Sutru, Pinky Beauty Parlour, Chitrokar, K Sera Sera, Baahubali, Bajirao Mastani and Airlift.

Director Rajamouli's multi-crore blockbuster Baahubali found place in the coveted section as per the rule that the best feature film of National Film Awards is naturally included in the IFFI's Indian Panorama.

Non-feature films

The non-feature film section jury chaired by documentary filmmaker Arvind Sinha has picked 21 films out of 198 eligible entries.

The 21 non-feature films which have been selected include films like Taandav, Cecilia, Memories of a Forgotten War and Chaukat. The section has three Malayalam films.
