Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the biggest sporting events of the country, has been a stage for young, talented cricketers to showcase their potential in front of the world.
In the last 10 years, the tournament, which boasts of a brand value of Rs 35,300 crore, has witnessed plenty of brilliant performances. Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel caught the attention of selectors and made it to the Indian team on the basis of their IPL performances.
However, not all players have been able to continue their IPL success consistently. There have been a few players who were able to win our hearts in the IPL, but then faded away. Here are those who failed to translate their IPL performances into greater success.
1. Manpreet Gony
Once a star player of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Manpreet Gony gave the impression that he could fill the gaps in the national squad as a lively medium-pacer who also use the big handle to good effect. In the inaugural IPL in 2008, Gony ended the season with 17 wickets and was the fourth highest wicket-taker. He played a crucial role in getting his team to the final. One month later, he was called-up for national duty. He played two matches in the Asia Cup 2008, in which he took two wickets at an average of 38 and an economy rate of 5.84. His performance in the second edition of the IPL was disappointing. As he couldn't replicate his IPL success, he slowly faded away from the scene.
2. Manvinder Bisla
Manvinder Singh Bisla was the hero for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2012. He was the one who helped KKR win their maiden title by hitting 89 in the final against CSK. However, he failed to continue the form in the next edition of the tournament and was later dropped by the team management. The Haryana player was deserted by the franchises as he could not return to form even in the domestic cricket. He has been out of the IPL for the last four years.
3. Rahul Sharma
The 2011 edition of the tournament saw the rise of Indian spinners. Five of the top seven wicket-takers were Indian spinners. Among them, Rahul Sharma caught the attention of almost everyone. The leggie, who played for Pune Warriors, picked up 16 wickets at an economy rate of 5.46. The performance helped him getting a place in the national team against the West Indies in the same year. But, he too failed to continue the form and ended up taking only nine wickets from six matches, including two T20 Internationals. The drug scandal of 2012, when Rahul and his Pune Warriors teammate Wayne Parnell were detained following a party at a hotel in the Juhu suburb of Mumbai, did not help his cause.
4. Sudeep Tyagi
Playing under M S Dhoni has been a dream for young Indian players in the IPL. They believed it will help then to get in to Team India's dressing room. Sudeep Tyagi may have hoped for the same when he was bought by CSK in 2008. However, he missed the season due to stress fracture. In the next edition, he made a string case for himself. The seamer kept things under control throughout his quota of four overs and caught the attention of Dhoni. He was picked for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. In his debut match, he finished with 1/15 in 6.3 overs. But he could never repeat that performance and Tyagi hasn't played for India since February, 2010.
5. Swapnil Asnodkar
He was perhaps the fastest Indian player to adapt to the IPL format. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 311 runs at a strike rate of 133.47 in the inaugural IPL for Rajasthan Royals. However, Asnodkar failed to keep up with the expectations in the subsequent seasons. He still plays for Goa and local cricket.
6. Joginder Sharma
Joginder Sharma was hugely popular when he was picked up by CSK in the first-ever IPL player auction. The Haryana medium-pacer created a huge fan base through his heroics in the final over of the inaugural ICC World T20 final against Pakistan. Joginder was MSD's trump card in the earlier stages of IPL. However, the Joginder had to abandon his cricket career as he met with a major road accident in 2011. Though the doctors advised him not to continue playing cricket, he returned to the domestic cricket to play for Haryana in 2012. He has been out of IPL ever since. Joginder is presently a deputy superintendent in Haryana Police.
7. Shadab Jakati
Shadab Jakati, a left-arm orthodox spinner, announced himself to the world in the second edition of the IPL, which was held in South Africa. In consecutive matches, he finished with figures of 4/24 and 4/22. He went on to play for three more years for CSK, picking up 47 wickets from 57 matches. However, the Goan never had the chance to represent India. Though he hoped for a return to the IPL this year with a better performance in the domestic circuit, he was not picked up by any franchise.
8. Kamran Khan
Kamran Khan had a promising debut season for Rajasthan Royals in 2009. The left-arm medium-pacer took six wickets for Royals. He was later bought by Pune Warriors with high expectations. However, he failed to continue his form with Pune. Shane Warne had once praised young Kamran as he could bowl at 140km/hr. Presently, he plays for Hyderabad's Cambridge Club, Air India and Cuffe Parade Cricket Club in local tournaments.
9. Parvinder Awana
The medium-pacer made his debut in IPL in 2012. He rose to fame by taking 17 wickets in 12 matches for Kings XI Punjab. Prior to that, he had a memorable outing for Delhi, owing to which he even made it to the Indian team in the shortest format. However, the youngster soon saw a dip in form. In 2014, he could only pick up seven wickets in as many matches. Awana later lost his form and had to move to the bench and eventually out of the IPL.
10. Paul Valthaty
Paul Valthaty had a sensational outing in the 2011 tournament. The Kings XI Punjab opener scored a magnificent hundred against CSK in the league phase. He ended the season by scoring 463 runs with a strike rate of 136.98. But, in the later editions, he could not replicate that success. He played seven matches in the 2012 and 2013 seasons and scored just 36 runs. Valthaty never played in the IPL again.
