Kuravilangad (Kottayam): Earning a driver’s license will soon be a sophisticated affair at Monippally, where the motor vehicles department is working on Kottayam district’s first computerized driving test track.
The ambitious project on 2.5 acres was launched two and a half years ago but it was caught up in technical snags. Keltron has restarted work on the project after the department untangled the blocks.
The project was rolled out as part of a 'Vision 2015' document drawn up by a team led by Kaduthuruthi MLA Mons Joseph. A vehicle testing station is also planned along with the test track. The first phase of work on the station was completed but the track was put on the back burner after a change in layout.
The track will change the age-old system of assessing an applicant for a driver’s license. The department officers will assess an applicant’s driving skills through cameras fitted on the track. A computer program can detect even a slight error.
The complex will also change the way fitness certificates are granted to vehicles. Examination of vehicles and fitness tests will be done with the help of computers, leaving little room for errors or malpractices.
Parassala, Kozhikode and Kannur are the only other places in Kerala to have automated testing stations, apart from the Uzhavoor joint RTO office in Kottayam.
