Thrissur: Veteran maddalam exponent Edappal Appunni passed away at his daughter's house in Kunnamkulam on Friday.
Appunni made his debut at the age of 21 after learning thakil vadyam from his father Thrithala Therambath Raman Nair at Sri Ramaswamy temple.
He became popular across the state and outside after he introduced maddala thayambaka along with his teacher Kadavallur Aravindakshan in 1978.
He has been honoured with Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award, P K Ramakrishnan Academy award, Kerala Kshetra Kala Akademi award, Poomulli Aaram Thamburan Memorial honour, and Guruvayoor Bhajanasangham Ayyappa honour.
Appunni had been an artiste at Akashvani since 1961. The first maddalam performance telecast on Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan was conducted by Appunni.
