Dr Kafeel Khan, target of UP admin, pained at Nipah deaths Dr Kafeel Khan has sought permission to work at the Medical College in Kozhikode that has been reeling under Nipah virus threat.

A doctor, victimised for mass death of infants in a Gorakhpur hospital due to shortage of oxygen last year, has expressed agony at the death of Nipah virus victims in Kerala and has sought permission to work at the Medical College in Kozhikode.

Dr Kafeel Khan has made the request to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a Facebook post.

Khan, who had visited Kerala last week, said reports on social media that create a wrong impression about the disease are worrying. “The situation that led to deaths from Nipah virus is killing my sleep,” he wrote. “Nurse Lini, who died attending to the patients, is an inspiration. I tried to sleep, but could not, as Nipah deaths haunt me. I request chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to enable me to work at Kozhikode Medical College to attend to innocent victims.

“I am ready to devote my life to service. May God give me the strength for that.”

CM welcomes Kafeel Khan's offer to work

Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said the state government was happy to welcome dedicated doctors who volunteer to serve in Kozhikode district affected by outbreak of the Nipah virus that has claimed ten lives.

Responding to a request of Dr Kafeel Khan, an accused in the BRD medical college infant tragedy case in Uttar Pradesh, in this regard, Pinarayi said the government was happy to welcome doctors like Khan to work in the state.

Pinarayi in a Facebook post said "There are several doctors who serve in the medical field without any concern to their life and health. I am seeing Khan as one among them," Vijayan said.

Vijayan asked him and other health workers who want to work in Kerala to get in touch with the Kozhikode Medical College superintendent.

Pinarayi pays tribute to Lini

Pinarayi, meanwhile, joined in offering tributes to Kerala nurse Lini, who had contracted the disease after attending to Nipah-affected patients and died on Monday. “There are no parallels to the sacrifice of Lini,” he posted on Facebook. “She died while carrying out her duties sincerely. The whole of Kerala shares the grief of Lini's family and friends.”

The chief minister's note:

“Lini, who had to sacrifice her life attending to patients, is an agonising memory for all of us. I bow to Lini, the nurse at Perambra hospital, who had to sacrifice her life as she took care of Nipah-infected patients. There are no parallels to such a sacrifice of life. It is all the more saddening that Lini suffered this tragedy while carrying out her duties sincerely. The whole of Kerala shares the grief of Lini's family and friends.”
