American retail giant Walmart wrapped up the acquisition of Indian shopping site Flipkart in the world's largest ever ecommerce deal so far. Walmart Inc has agreed to pay $16 billion for a roughly 77 per cent stake in Indian online shopping site Flipkart, the US retailer's biggest foreign investment ever as it battles rival Amazon.com Inc in one of the world's biggest emerging markets.
Karnataka all set to elect a new Assembly
The vitriol-filled campaign for the Karnataka Assembly elections ended on Thursday with top leaders of the BJP and Congress, including prime minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, making a last-gasp effort to sway the voters in a likely cliffhanger. The state is all set to elect a new Assembly on Saturday. While present CM Siddaramaiah and his Congress party are busy propagating their AHINDA programme, leader B S Yeddyurappa’s BJP is leaving no stone unturned in polarizing votes along the Hindutva lines. Considered the dark horse in the race, Kumarswamy’s JDS is consolidating its Vokkaliga vote base.
No Day-Night Test please, BCCI tells Cricket Australia
The BCCI has officially informed Cricket Australia that India will not play any Day/Night Test match on their tour Down Under at the end of this year. While Cricket Australia were insistent on having a pink ball Test, which has been a convention for all touring teams for the past few years but the Indian board has made it clear that they will not deviate from the traditional red-ball matches.
PM Modi, Oli flag off Janakpur-Ayodhya bus service
Prime minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli on Friday jointly inaugurated a direct bus service between Janakpur and Ayodhya - the two sacred cities for Hindus. Tthe bus service is part of the Ramayan Circuit to promote religious tourism in Nepal and India. Modi flagged off the bus after visiting the famed 20th century Janaki temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita, where he offered special prayers.
Kerala govt to provide free Internet to 20 lakh poor families
Moving ahead with its ambitious programme to provide free Internet to over 20 lakh poor families, the Kerala government on Wednesday decided to set up a Joint Venture company to launch its new optic fibre pathway. A cabinet meeting, chaired by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accorded sanction to set up the Kerala Fibre Optic Network Limited, the Joint Venture, to implement the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) project. The K-FON initiative is being implemented to provide speedy Internet connectivity to government offices and educational institutions and also quality Internet service to the public at an affordable rate.
