Akhil started thinking of an own venture when the pressure from work at a software company became too much to handle. While still at work, the computer sciences graduate learnt the nuances of various businesses that he could do online. He also talked to friends who were already into it. Finally, he decided to try his luck in social media marketing.
He found clients over the Internet. Akhil does product promotion work for companies including in the US and Europe. He takes up assignments based on the number of pages he has to promote on social media as well as on a monthly basis. He selects only those clients who offer advance payment options.
Some clients provide material including concept, content and images for the promotional campaign. Using those and based on their requirement, he does the marketing. For some others, he will have to find all the resources. Financial terms are finalized before he starts a work.
We need to do some research on our side as well on the product that we are going to market and the market itself, Akhil says. For that, he depends mainly on Google and previous marketing data from the clients. He has been doing the work from home for two years and makes about Rs 1 lakh a month.
While there aren’t any specific work hours, if you want to directly interact with clients overseas, you will have to be online at times convenient to them. Everything else could be done at your convenience.
Those who want to enter this space must first prepare a profile of their own. Don’t be unduly worried about the rates you get initially, but make sure that you have done the work well. Try building strong customer feedback, which will help you gain major assignments, says Akhil.

In the next phase, they plan to expand the business to other cities through the franchise route.
