In a first, ban on viewing Thrissur Pooram fireworks at close quarters

Thrissur: For the first time Kerala police have imposed restriction on people viewing Thrissur Pooram fireworks from close vicinity. The police have told Devasom Board that director general of police (DGP) has issued the order considering the safety of the people and the order would not be revoked. They have ruled out any further discussion on it.

As per the new police order, people will not be allowed entry from Ragam theatre side to Naikkanal considering its proximity to the Pooram firework ground. With this order, people would not get a chance to see the sample fireworks happening on Monday and the fireworks on April 26 at close quarters. Only the fireworks in the sky would be visible to spectators.

Earlier, people were allowed to view the fireworks from places other than the finishing point of fireworks.

While the police is taking precautions, an earlier decision to empty oil from petrol pumps in the vicinity of fireworks is still remaining on the paper.

The police had also tried to impose restriction on people assembling in the middle when the popular ceremony 'Kudamattom' is held on either side of the Pooram ground. The move was dropped after locals piled pressure on police. Interestingly, questions have arose as to why this restriction was revoked if the security and safety of the public was paramount.
