It's May 21 and as ardent movie buffs in Kerala would remind you – it's Mohanlal's birthday! As we join the countless fans in celebrating the special day, we take a look back on why he is the king of Mollywood.
The complete actor
No, we are not talking about the actor's blog. Mohanlal has donned countless avatars in his acting career spanning over 3 decades. And it could be unlikely that one would be able to pick an emotion that the actor hasn't enacted to perfection on screen. We laughed our heads off watching Kilukkam, wept with him in Kireedam and put our thinking cap on for Drishyam. All movies par excellence and thanks to the matchless actor called Mohanlal.

One more reason we love Mohanlal is for his musical and dancing skills. He has rendered his voice for more than 30 songs and most of them for his own films. And we just loved him as he danced in Kamaladalam and donned the Kathakali attire for Vanaprastham.
Rs 100 crore club
In 2016, Pulimurugan pole-vaulted into history as the first movie from Malayalam to enter the Rs 100 crore club. And bulk of the credit goes to the acting prowess of this man, who was able to pounce, attack and tame the wild cat. Roar went Mohanlal in Pulimurugan and the theaters erupted in joy.
Mohanlal in PulimuruganNational glory
Mohanlal has won the National Award twice for acting, while the other Big M of Mollywood – Mammootty – has won the honor thrice. But last National Awards saw Mohanlal winning the special jury mention for his acting in Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Pulimurugan, Janatha Garage, sealing his position on top of the ladder. He had won the special jury mention in Kireedam too. Mohanlal was also the producer of Vanaprastham that was adjudged the best film in 1999.

There is more to life than the silver screen for Mohanlal and he is not the one to languish in the tinsel town, unaware of the troubles of the ordinary people. He shares the common man's agony and plight on his blog. On the 21st of every month, he pens down his views on social issues from protest marches to the need for educating the tribal children. As a household name dear to the Malayalam-speaking crowd, Mohanal is indeed loved by all those who know him.
Happy Birthday Mohanlal and thank you!
