Kochi: M in Mollywood stands for male chauvinism? That statement could be termed an exaggeration or plain male bashing but yet another young Malayalam actress has pointed fingers at the patriarchal ways of the film industry.
Actress Hima Sankar has said a practice called 'bed with acting' package existed in Mollywood. "While I was studying at the School of Drama, a couple of people from the industry called and said that if I was up for the 'bed with acting' package, I can land movie roles," she told reporters Thursday.
"When I said I didn't understand the phrase, the person repeated 'bed with acting.' I said no to three such people," explained the actress, who has worked in a couple of Malayalam movies.
Her statement comes a month after Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) president Innocent said that the 'casting couch' practice was a thing of the past. Innocent's comment had drawn flak from various quarters, with Women in Cinema Collective alleging that many who came to this field were subjected to various types of exploitation.
Remarking on the patriarchy that holds firm on society as a whole, Hima said: "Everyone says that a woman should express her opinions. However, the same society attacks those women who speak up."
The actress was talking during a promotional event of her latest film, Sarvopari Palakkaran.
