Thiruvananthapuram: Finance minister T M Thomas Isaac peppered his budget speech on Friday with extracts from celebrated stories and poems. What took the cake, however, was a short poem written by a school student from Pulappatta.

Isaac, who earmarked 13.6 per cent of the budget for woman-centric programs, quoted liberally from women writers including Lalithambika Antharjanam, P Valsala, Vijayalakshmi and K R Meera. After concluding the budget speech with Balamaniyamma’s ‘Navakeralam’, Isaac took to Facebook to share the mention of the youngest writer.

“I had planned to include women writers’ lines in this budget. While I was searching for suitable lines, I came across a poem written by a girl named N P Sneha. The 12 lines were a strong statement on kitchen. Sneha has jotted down the invisible work done by women in the kitchen.”

Sneha wrote the poem when she was a high school student. She is a plus two student of the MNKM Higher Secondary School at Pulappatta. Her mother Sheeba is a teacher and father Pradeep a contractor.

Sneha wrote ‘Lab’ for a sub district-level school arts festival. The poem had gone viral on social media at the time.
