Thomas Chandy case: HC gives collector Anupama a lesson in official duties Anupama admitted her mistake before the court and said that she failed to verify the facts.

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Friday slammed Alappuzha distrcit collector T V Anupama over the land grab case against former Kerala transport minister Thomas Chandy.

The court annulled two notices issued by the collector to Chandy, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and the Kuttanad MLA, after the survey number mentioned was found incorrect. Anupama admitted her mistake before the court and said that she failed to verify the facts. The court then slammed the IAS officer for failing to discharge her duties.

Anupama had issued a notice to the management of Water World Tourism Company, of which Chandy is a director, asking them to appear before her on February 23 with an explanation on the allegations against them. The survey number and block number of the land mentioned in the notice were marked wrong. After realizing the mistakes, the collector had re-issued the notice with a correction. She informed the court about the turn of events and expressed willingness to withdraw or cancel both the notices. The court had stayed the proceedings on the first notice, dated February 17, on February 21.

Anupama, in her notice, had sought explanation from the company for not initiating action against them on the basis of the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act.

Chandy was forced to resign from the CPM-led Left Democratic Front cabinet in November following allegations of violation of various land-related laws and encroachment of the backwaters for his resort in Alappuzha district.
