Janamaitri Police build home for poor family in Muvatupuzha

Muvattupuzha: The police maybe a terrifying presence for many, but for Kulangarakudiyil Rajan and his family the men in khaki from Muvattupuzha Janamaitri Police Station are nothing short of messiahs sent by God.

Rajan, a native of Rakkad in Muvattupuzha, his wife and two children lived in a one room shack made of torn plastic sheets. The ramshackle house was hardly any resistance against rain or sun. Thanks to the good Samaritans of Muvattupuzha Police Station, Rajan and family will move to a two-bedroom concrete house which is built under the Janamaitri Policing program. The program is funded by monthly contributions from police officers.

Under the program, Muvattupuzha police came up with a proposal to construct houses for poor families within the station limits who have land but no finance to build a house. The program found eight eligible families, including Rajan’s, through a survey.

Police personnel were involved in every stage of construction. The plan for the house was prepared by Dileep, an officer from Vazhakulam Police Station. Ernakulam Rural SP A V George laid the foundation stone. The construction was wrapped up in three months under the daily supervision of officers who kept an eye on every detail including carpentry and painting work.

The fund required for the construction was entirely raised by the cops. Apart from contributions from their monthly salary, the cops also took donations from kind-hearted people to complete the endeavor.

On Saturday, director general of police Loknath Behra handed over the key to the house to Rajan at a function presided over by IG Vijay Sakhare in the presence of entire police force from Muvattupuzha Station.
