Orphaned elephant calf gets special care at rehab

Rajakumari, Idukki: A five-month-old elephant calf, orphaned after the death of his mother, is receiving VIP care from the Forest Department officials at the Elephant Rehabilitation Centre at Kottoor in Thiruvananthapuram district.

The calf was spotted at Chinnakanal town in Idukki district on Tuesday afternoon and was taken to Kottoor in Thiruvananthapuram by Friday evening. The vehicle carrying the animal was stopped on the way every hour to provide it with Lactogen, tender coconut etc.

A team at Kottoor, led by veterinary officer Dr Dayamon, is observing the calf's health. It is now kept in a special room and will remain there for two weeks.

Visitors will be able to see the calf after that. Forest officials said Forest Minister K. Raju will pay a visit and name the calf.
