Human beings are considered as human when they interact with the society constructively. That is perhaps the reason why those who are not considered to have humanity in them are restricted behind bars. As much as food pollution destroys humanity, sound pollution is also an impediment to humanity.
The State Committee of the Sunni Mahal Federation, which recently provoked thought on prayers that cause sound pollution, has made a welcome initiative. The committee has urged that loudspeakers should be used only moderately in mosques. If other religions too follow this model, then Kerala would be blessed. This giant stride of the federation should serve to encourage other religions to control sound pollution, which would then increase mutual respect and tolerance between religions.
While religions are designed to encourage humanity, most religious activities these days are directed the opposite way. We need to consider how our activities affect others and it is high time that we initiate measures that reduce sound pollution.
This note should not be considered as a mere news clip, but should be considered as a call for ensuring a basic requirement in Kerala. All such activities that prevent the flourishing of humanity should be discouraged in the name of God and all religions should take part in this initiative. This should be the duty of each Keralite.
It is perhaps divine providence that I have been ordained to speak up against it. May God give me the strength and will to back up my words with action.
While it is not possible to totally do away with loudspeakers, especially in large religious meetings, all religions need to think together about how the nuisance of sound pollution can be mitigated as much as possible.
The government has in the past taken action following news reports in popular media. May God bless this idea which could redeem the state of noise pollution.
