Berliner artist showcases her work 'Pavilion’ in Kochi Sabine Schrunder at Pepper House

Kochi: A German artist gave aesthetically-conceived glimpses on core individuality in a consumerist society, as Berliner Sabine Schrunder rolled out self-shot images on topics ranging from meditation, neo-spiritualism and inner shelters to 'optimised self' in a capitalistic world.

Named ‘Pavilion’, the 43-year-old European’s work is one result of her residency programme being organised by Kochi Biennale Foundation at Pepper House in Fort Kochi. Sabine’s art explores the place of the individual in society through the media of the photography and video.

The artist, who is also part of the Bangalore residency of the Goethe Institut’s Bengaluru chapter, has been in this city since mid-July. The essence of the latest work by Sabine, who will conclude her six-week Kochi residency work this month-end, was shown through an hour-long show of the slides this evening.

Sabine Schrunder works mainly with photography and video on socio-cultural topics. Of particular focus is the exploration of how society works in predetermined structures and the dynamics between groups and individuals.

The exhibition, which ignites imagination as much as it displays it, strings together a set of reduced as well as dense photographs that seem to float around invisible borders between inner and outer worlds and connect aspects of silence, uncertainty and the question of the essential.
