Kottayam: Riyas Komu and Bose Krishnamachari, the artistic founders of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, are in ArtReview's Power 100 list 2015. The list of the prestigious global art magazine is a compilation of the 100 most influential people in contemporary art world in 2015.

In the list topped by Iwan and Manuela Wirth, the co-presidents of art collectors Hauser & Wirth, Komu and Krishnamachari have been included in the 86th spot as new entrants in the prestigious list.

"The first edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale was a sharp learning curve for all concerned – Komu has talked of the 'stones of accusation, criticism, widespread pessimism' that weighed heavy on these initial efforts – but the second edition, curated by artist Jitish Kallat (and drawing on Kochi’s maritime history and the fourteenth-to-sixteenth-century Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics, with works by 94 artists from 30 countries), had garnered widespread respect by the time it finished its run, earlier this year," the magazine said in its citation.

"It is a great recognition for Kochi Biennale Foundation team, the people of Kochi and all our supporters, including the artist community, for making Kochi-Muziris Biennale a success," Komu told Onmanorama over phone from Kochi.

Reacting to the news Bose said it was a recognition not only for them but for the whole Indian art world.

"No other biennale has been included in the list. It shows that the Kochi-Muziris Biennale has been accepted by the international art world. People from various fields look forward to the list. Kochi Biennale was globally noticed with the help of locals only. In that sense, it's a recognition for Kochi and Kerala. It's a great honour to be placed with artists whom we respect," Bose, who is in Mumbai, told Onmanorama.

The third edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale will be held in 2016. Sudarshan Shetty will be its artistic director and curator.
